Mondi reports its sustainability performance in global context

Mondi Group has today published the progress made in 2012 with its sustainable development commitments.

The company has continued to develop and evolve its reporting and for 2012 has disclosed its performance through three separate but interrelated elements: its 2012 Integrated report and financial statements, its sustainable development report – available exclusively online – and for the first time its performance in the context of the world’s most pressing sustainability issues in a document: Shaping our sustainable future, also released today.

Shaping our sustainable future uses the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s (WBCSD) Vision 2050 pathways to provide an independent, verifiable means of measuring progress.  It also presents a particular emphasis on the innovative and long-term solutions developed to ensure full compliance and contribution from its operations throughout the world.

Mondi’s response is considered in light of its risk management process, the material issues identified and broad stakeholder engagement, and is charted across the issues of people and human development, forests and associated ecosystems, economy, energy and climate change, materials and water. It encompasses all aspects of its activities relating to these key issues, including: regulatory compliance with forestry certification requirements; providing meaningful employment opportunities for local communities; sustaining a safe and healthy working environment for its people; and proactive protection and nurturing of the ecosystems in which it operates.

These commitments will enable the Group to make further progress against the objectives set out to ensure its sustainable, responsible performance.

“It has always been our view that actions speak louder than words,” comments chief executive David Hathorn. “Sustainable development is an integral part of our business, and as such our licence to trade and all that this entails, underpins everything we do. Securing and maintaining this licence is a responsibility and accountability held at the most senior levels of management within our organisation.”
